Sykes-picot
In this game, two players take on the roles of infamous diplomats Mark Sykes and Francois Georges-Picot, using red and blue markers to carve out territories to control and to influence on a dry-erase map. Trick-taking card play and table-talk negotiations drive the proceedings, with the winner of each trick choosing one of the two cards to implement, and the loser consoling themselves with the remaining card. Each player has a set of hidden objectives they’re trying to achieve. Players may be as cooperative or as competitive as they wish in pursuit of these goals.
threed
Coming from The Seahorse and the Hummingbird
Threed is a 2-4 player trick-taking game that uses a unique sliding puzzle mechanism. Players play trick cards around a shared tableau of randomized image cards, each of which is one third of a larger three-card picture. When tricks are resolved, whoever wins the trick takes the image card at stake, moves the sliding puzzle a number of spaces determined by the value of the winning card, and then adds a new image card to the tableau. Whoever completes the three-card image wins the game.
painkillers
In Negotiations
In the 1990s, American pharmaceutical companies introduced opioid-based pain medications into the wider market, which led to a decades-long national epidemic that has killed nearly 800,000 people. In this game, players take leadership of these companies as they try to maximize their profits. They must avoid the attention of the federal government, the public’s outrage, and letting the human consequences of the epidemic itself get out of hand. This game is bleak, and it asks a lot of those who engage with it because this story is an important one.
spindletop
In Negotiations
It’s 1901 and oil has just been discovered in Southeast Texas at Spindletop, a massive gusher near Beaumont. You take ownership of an oil company as you race to capitalize on this newfound black gold. In the game, you’ll balance a hand of cards, using some to take actions across the map (with Texagons!) and keeping others in hand to position yourself for a game of Texas Hold ‘Em at the end of each round. Recruit workers, prospect for oil, build infrastructure, and sell oil to gain revenue, but manage your debt so it doesn’t ruin you at the end of the game. Spindletop is a risky game of crude profits!
